Preparation and planning

Two different jobs, and you may want both

Tax preparation looks back. It is the careful work of completing and filing your return for a year that has ended.

Tax planning looks ahead. It is a conversation, during the year, about what may affect your next return, so decisions are made with information instead of in a rush in April.

Many clients start with preparation and add planning once they see how much easier the next year can be.

FAQ

Questions people ask before they start

Cannot find your question? Send it to us and we will answer it.

How do I get started?
Use the form above or contact us. We will reply with a few questions and a checklist of what to send.
What is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning?
Preparation is completing and filing your return for a year that has already ended. Planning looks ahead, so you understand what may affect your next return while there is still time to act. See tax planning.
How much will it cost?
Fees depend on the complexity of your return and the work involved. We explain the fee before we begin so there are no surprises. We do not publish a one-size-fits-all price because returns vary a lot.
Do I have to meet in person?
Not necessarily. Tell us what you prefer and we will explain the options for sharing documents and reviewing your return.
Can you help with several years of returns I have not filed?
Often, yes. Please contact us and tell us which years are involved. Raise it early, because the sooner it is addressed the better.
What if I get a letter from a tax agency?
Do not ignore it. Send us a copy and we will tell you whether it is something we can help with directly, or whether you would be better served by another professional.
Can you guarantee a refund or a lower tax bill?
No. Nobody can honestly promise that before seeing your documents. We prepare your return accurately, point out items you may want to ask about, and explain the result.
