Tax Preparation vs. Tax Planning: What Is the Difference?
People often use the two terms interchangeably, but they describe different work.
Tax preparation looks back
Tax preparation means completing and filing a return for a year that has finished. The facts are set; the job is to report them accurately and completely. Preparation is time-sensitive, because filing deadlines apply.
Tax planning looks ahead
Tax planning is a conversation during the year about what may affect your next return. It helps you understand your situation while there is still time to make informed decisions. It is about understanding your options, not about promises of savings.
When might you want each?
- Preparation: every year you need to file. Almost everyone needs this.
- Planning: when something is changing, such as income that varies, a new business, a purchase or a life event, or when you simply want fewer surprises.
A word of caution
Be wary of anyone who promises a refund or a particular saving before seeing your documents. Results depend on your circumstances and on the rules in effect, which change.
