What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment
A little preparation makes your appointment shorter and your return more accurate. Your preparer will confirm exactly what you need, but this list covers most situations.
Basics
- Your name, date of birth and taxpayer identification number, and the same for anyone included on your return.
- Last year’s tax return, if you have it.
- Bank details if you would like a refund deposited directly or a payment made electronically.
Income
- Wage statements from employers (W-2).
- Forms reporting other income, such as 1099 forms for freelance work, interest, dividends or retirement distributions.
- Records of any income that did not come with a form.
Deductions and credits
- Mortgage interest and property tax statements, if you own a home.
- Records of charitable giving.
- Education and health coverage forms, if they apply.
- Childcare costs, if relevant.
Other items
- Records of estimated tax payments you made during the year.
- Any letters you received from a tax agency.
- Notes about anything that changed: a move, a new job, a marriage, a new child or a new business.
Not sure about something?
Bring it anyway, or ask first. We would rather see a document you did not need than miss one you did.
